Leadership & Management Excellence

Marks & Spencer – where we have developed and delivered leadership programmes for both Retail and Head Office which are driven by the company's eight business competencies and based on a series of learning modules aimed at helping both ‘new' and ‘existing' managers aspire to the next level of leadership. Extensive use is made of small, intensive learning sets which work on solving real time issues and contribute to improved business performance.

This is a major initiative targeting over 1000 managers within the company and delivered throughout the UK.

Lewisham Council – The leadership programme designed and delivered by ABA is closely aligned to the Council's organisation development strategies of "From Good to Great" and "Fast Forward" which are aimed at delivering ratings of "Excellence" for the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) undertaken by the Audit Commission.

Again leadership competencies are at the heart of the programme, with the 12 dimensions on which managers assess their need via a bespoke 360° questionnaire. The programme features a highly realistic organisation simulation, portrayed by professional actors, and provides a practical and challenging way for managers to test and develop their leadership skills.

Building High Performance Teams

adidas – "Find The Leader in You" is a major initiative to build the company's future global leadership and teamworking capability. The most talented individuals in the company are selected to attend the programme which focuses in keeping adidas at the forefront of innovation and enterprise in what is a highly competitive international marketplace. Working with our partner David Matthew of Change-fx we delivered the first team development module of the programme in a beautiful setting just outside Vienna.

Natural England – "Eight months into Natural England and it feels like we have come a long way. The rate of change in setting up our new teams has been challenging, and as new offices, new goals and new ways of working take shape over the coming months this challenge is not going to diminish…" Alan Law, Regional Director. Given this backdrop the importance of effective teamwork is at a premium and ABA have recently designed and facilitated an event to help the South Eastern Regional Team to focus on their performance. The event was built around some initial diagnostic work followed by a series of facilitated sessions which enabled the team to have a real say in creating the vision, values and behaviours to drive the region forward.

Eurostar – Hi-Potential Development Centre: Recognising, managing and keeping talented people….. let alone keeping them ‘on track' is a key challenge for any organisation. The cost of recruiting new talent is enormous so learning how to keep the best people has formed a key part of our work with Eurostar on their talent management programme. We designed and facilitated with Eurostar a hi-potential programme which had these key ingredients:-

These sessions were supported by learning sets, the extensive use of learning contracts and challenging seminar group work where participants worked on creative solutions to current business challenges.

Northern Trust Bank: Competency-based interviewing - knowing how to gather evidence and use it skillfully to assess performance has been a key feature to help managers use competency information in a structured, evidence-based way. The programmes have been delivered in London, Dublin and Luxemburg.

English Heritage – a rolling programme of management skills courses covering such areas as Negotiating, Presentation Skills, Performance Development & Review, Managing Customer Service, Dealing with Demanding Situations.

Eurostar – a suite of short personal excellence modules focusing on assertiveness, personal presence & impact, dealing with stress, effective writing.

Watford Borough Council – a series of 1 day HR programmes covering Performance Capability, Health & Attendance and Discipline & Grievance aimed at managers and supervisors throughout the organisation.

Sodexho – receptionists at some of the City's Corporate HQ's need to be highly skilled in providing customer service to a wide range of challenging and demanding clients. Our programmes have focused on high levels of practical work to develop these skills with professional actors playing out a series of difficult customer interactions.

Short Course Programme

Bank of America – where we have developed three "quick hit" sessions, Creating High Performance Teams, Influencing Without Power and Feedback Masterclass, together with a one hour Munch & Learn session on Conflict Management. This is being presented to an audience of over 200 and recorded in DVD format for the Bank's European Branches.

Lewisham Council – a series of 12 "Nugget" sessions lasting 1½ hours have been designed around the Council's key management competencies and delivered to groups of up to 20 managers. The most popular titles include "Managing the Political Interface", "Thinking Broadly" and "Why Results Matter".

Marks & Spencer – the Competency Workshop series has been designed to promote and embed the company's key business and management drivers and have proved very popular in the Breakfast Seminar format. One of the exciting spin-offs from this series has been the formulation of competency learning sets in the areas of Commercial Acumen and Influencing focusing on specific retail management issues.

Event Management

Kings Fund – who we have worked with in partnership for over 10 years to deliver the outdoor learning element of the NHS Senior Management Development Programme. This module is delivered over three days against the dramatic backdrop of Dartington Hall near Dartmouth. The programme culminates in major exercise known as ‘Chloe' which challenges participants to cope with competing and ambiguous objectives, deliver creative solutions and maximise the whole group's potential.

BAA – Large construction projects present the difficult challenge of co-ordinating numerous partners to deliver one major outcome and they do not come much bigger than the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow. In an indoor activity called ‘Rollerball' we brought together over 100 people working in 12 sub-project teams to provide a highly successful event in inter-team working.
